Faith Cometh by Hearing!

The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans the 10th Chapter and the 17th verse, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”! Paul was writing to the church at Rome in this text to bolster their efforts in geeting the Word of God out, and to let this church know the sheer power of the Word of God. He wrote in laymen’s terms that one’s faith is bolstered by hearing the word of God. The hearing of the Word of God sets the atmosphere for the creation of Faith. Faith is the word pistis in the Greek, which means assurance, reliant trust, conviction, belief, and an immovable and unshakeable deep rooted belief that motivates one to action. The book of James states that, “Faith Without Works is Dead”. Where is the Faith that will motivate the masses of believers to action? Where is the Faith that will spur many of us to take up the cause of right? That kind of faith will come by our hearing of the word of God!

The Message Bible’s take on Roman’s 10 verse 17 is, “Before you can trust you have to listen, but unless Christ’s word is preached there is nothing to listen to”. There are billions of people in this world who need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. Are we committed in this hour to give them that good news? If whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, how can the masses of people around the world call upon him whom they have not believed? Romans Chapter 10 verses 14-15 goes on further with these questions, “How shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Are we proclaiming the good things in this tremendous hour of exposure for the Word of God?

From these writing of the Apostle Paul one would generate that if one is to have Faith one must first hear the Word of God. The formula from the preceding statement would reflect as follows No Word would equal No Faith. In order to have the faith that we would need to overcome our daily fight with adversity, disappointment, and negative emotions we must have the Word of God as a daily part of our lives as Christians! The Word of God should be heard on a daily basis to counter the daily barrage of negative news that we hear on a daily basis. We must hear the Word of God often and study of the Word of God should be a daily routine for every Christian!

Without the Word of God, we would not have the faith that would remove mountains, we would not have the faith that the uncompromisingly righteous should live by, we will not have the faith that would inspire us to works(Faith in Action), we would not have have the faith that we would need to be made whole, we would not have the faith that we would need to save ourselves by making Godly choices, we would not have the power to great wonders and what would seem to be miraculous among the masses of unbelieving individuals, we would not have the faith to be healed, delivered, or set free, we would not have the faith to establish churches, we would not have the faith to justify us, we would not have the faith to be strong in faith and give glory to God despite adverse circumstances, we would not have the faith to have faith in the power of God and not in the wisdom of men, and we certainly would not have the faith to walk strictly by faith and not by sight! If it were not for the Word of God would we have the faith to subdue kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtain promises, stop the mouths of lions, quench the violence of fire, escape the edge of the sword, or be made strong out of weakness?

The Word of God is our tool to accomplish these exploits. How are we using this powerful tool in this hour? The demands of this hour are calling for much more than catch phrases, cliches, nursery rhymes, and other things that would ticle the fancy of those with itching ears. It is imperative that the Body of Christ returns to frequent reading of the Word of God by every believer. Even as preachers, one must continue a daily regiment of hearing and reading the Word of God. The Word of God is Fresh and will never grow Stale! Let’s proclaim the Word of God to a dying world. If faith comes from listening to this message of good news, the good news about Christ, as it is penned by The New Living Translation, let’s take this good news to the world that they can have the faith that can conquer anything!
